The man accused of faking his own death and leaving the country to avoid rape charges appeared in a Utah courtroom for a preliminary hearing. Nicholas Rossi appeared in person at the Matheson Third District Courthouse in Salt Lake City Thursday. The hearing was held to discuss the use of a witness statement in his upcoming trial for rape of his former girlfriend in Orem in 2008.Prosecutors rested their case after Rossi’s attorney specified Rossi’s identity in the case, and in the document with the witness’ statement. Judge Barry G. Lawrence admitted the document into the case, saying the state gave enough evidence for it to be used at trial.In March 2020, a statement claiming to be from family members said Nicholas Alahverdian – Rossi’s legal name – had died after a battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Rossi was accused of fleeing to the United Kingdom to escape the Utah charge and other domestic violence complaints in Rhode Island. He was arrested at a Glasgow, Scotland hospital in Dec. 2021, where he was being treated for COVID-19. During multiple court appearances, he claimed he was an Irish orphan named Arthur Knight – and that he had never been to the United States.
