A roundup of recent news including President Trump's response to a shooting, updates on the 'Gold Card', a former prosecutor running for Congress, changes to federal death penalty procedures, a dropped investigation involving Jerome Powell, and debate over US security responsibilities in the Strait of Hormuz.

President Donald Trump praised the Secret Service for acting quickly after a shooting incident happened at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Trump said the event will be rescheduled.

President Trump's"Gold Card" was unveiled to much fanfare back in February 2025, but how many people have actually been granted one? CNN's Jake Tapper breaks it down.

The former deputy to Special Counsel Jack Smith, J.P. Cooney, who was the lead prosecutor in both criminal indictments against President Trump, is now running as a Democrat in Virginia's newly drawn congressional district. He tells OutFront if he’s elected, he would vote to impeach Trump. The Justice Department announced Friday it is continuing to clear the way for expediting federal death-penalty cases, including by expanding the manners of execution to include death by firing squad.

CNN’s Paula Reid reports. Jeanine Pirro, the US Attorney for the District of Columbia, said the Justice Department is dropping the criminal investigation of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, which likely clears the way for Kevin Warsh as his successor. CNN's Evan Perez reports.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth argued the US shouldn’t shoulder the burden of protecting the Strait of Hormuz, saying America “barely” uses the chokepoint and has ample energy supplies, while Europe and Asia should stop “free-riding” and take a larger role.
