Christopher Pedlar, a Houston dentist and university professor, has been arrested for allegedly inhaling nitrous oxide while driving. This is not his first encounter with the law regarding nitrous oxide.
A Houston dentist and university professor , Christopher Pedlar, has been arrested again for allegedly inhaling nitrous oxide , commonly known as laughing gas , while driving. Harris County Sheriff's deputies apprehended Pedlar on Sunday afternoon after he was clocked speeding on West 19th Street and initially refused to pull over. Upon stopping half a mile later, deputies discovered 107 canisters of nitrous oxide in the backseat of his vehicle.
A canister was found ice-cold and attached to a mask, suggesting recent use. Pedlar reportedly admitted to inhaling the gas and stated he had been using it all day. This is not Pedlar's first encounter with the law regarding nitrous oxide. Court records reveal three arrests since October 2024 for possession of the regulated gas. In two previous instances, he was found with over 100 canisters. In October 2024, Katy police arrested Pedlar for possession, and the following month, Houston police found him in his car with 112 nitrous oxide canisters. An earlier incident involving Pedlar and nitrous oxide was recorded in 2017. The Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE) issued a warning and ordered Pedlar to be evaluated in 2020. Pedlar's public defender informed the court that he does not actively practice dentistry but teaches it. He was a full-time professor at UTHealth School of Dentistry-Houston, but his profile has since been removed from the university's website. The school has yet to release a statement regarding his employment status. His defense attorney, David Smith, emphasized that Pedlar's case should be 'tried in a court of law and not in the media.' Authorities are currently investigating the source of the nitrous oxide. Pedlar, licensed in Texas since 2012, faces multiple misdemeanor charges, including possession of a volatile chemical, fleeing a police officer, interfering with a public servant, and possession of inhalant paraphernalia. He is currently out of jail on bonds totaling $10,000. According to the TSBDE's website, his dental license remains active
