Dior Cruise Show: Tinseltown Charm Meets Unique Vision

Creative director Jonathan Anderson held his first Cruise show with Dior at the historic Los Angeles County Museum of Art, fusing Tinseltown culture and charm with his unique vision for the Maison.

Creative director Jonathan Anderson held his first Cruise show with Dior just after sunset on Wednesday evening at the historic Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Based on its location alone, it’s clear Anderson was highly intentional about fusing Tinseltown culture and charm with his unique vision for the Maison.

“It's an amazing location: We are at the LACMA Museum, in the new wing,” creative and image director of Dior Makeup, Peter Philips, tells Bazaar ahead of the collection’s debut. “The show is outside, and it’s almost like a cinematic setting—there are Cadillacs, very Twin Peaks. There’s a love scene, a model will be retouching her makeup, so there are little moments within the show—it’s a bit vintage Hollywood style.

”In keeping with the presentation’s airy, outdoor theme, you would be hard-pressed to spot a stick-straight blowout on this Dior runway.

“We went for a very natural look for hair, very loose,” adds Philips. The models’ hair was kept wavy, windblown, and tightly coiled, led by celebrity stylist Guido Palau and team. Their makeup looks were also kept somewhat on the natural side, save for high-wattage skin glow.

Philips and team first prepped male and female models’ skin using Dior’s branded Dior Les Patchs Yeux, along with a small amount of the Capture Le Sérum—too much can make skin appear shiny under the runway spotlights, the artist explains—followed by the Capture Soft Crème.

“Using thin layers ensures that the makeup look is long-lasting,” adds Philips. Their dewy finish was achieved first by color-correcting with Dior Forever Skin Correct, then applying Dior Forever Skin Glow according to each model’s skin tone.

“We enhance the skin because we want to make it look very natural, but still glorified,” explains the artist. Philips used an underpainting technique with the Dior Backstage Rosy Glow Stick in shades 006 Berry, 012 Rosewood, and 063 Pink Lilac to elevate their base makeup without making blush the look’s central focus. To define brows, the artist and team used a combination of the Diorshow On Set Brow and Diorshow Brow Styler.

The artist also furthered the Ghost Lashes trend by opting for no mascara or eyeliner on the runway, and instead lined select models’ eyes with a whimsical row of Swarovski crystals to channel the twinkle of Tinseltown, after applying a range of shadows from the Diorshow 5 Couleurs palette in 649 Nude Dress.

“I use a flat brush, like a brow brush, to push a dark shade like Poncho into the roots of the lashes to make them look more defined and full and elongate the eye in a very natural way,” notes Philips. “I follow the lash line on the top lashes, and maybe one or two stones extended, but without it becoming a wing. Because once it becomes a wing, it becomes less conceptual, but more showgirl-y.

So it's more about that surprise effect without becoming a glam, and it looks really cool. ”To finish the makeup look and lock it in place all day, the artist spritzed on Dior Backstage Air Flash Mist. And to give the lips a bit of a plumping effect with an opaque shine, Philips and team applied Dior’s Lip Maximizer in shade 001 Pink.

Models’ nails were also kept fairly natural, with the neutral Base Vernis applied after the brand’s Dior Huile Abricot cuticle oil, along with Dior Nail Glow, top coat, and Le Baume to keep hands soft and smooth.
