Danish Study Reveals Immigrants Three Times More Likely to Commit Crimes, Sparking UK Transparency Debate

A Danish government analysis shows immigrants are nearly three times more likely to commit crimes than natives, prompting calls for the UK to release similar data. The findings highlight significant cultural disparities and have fueled debates on migration policies in both countries.

A recent analysis conducted by the Danish government has revealed that immigrants are nearly three times more likely to commit crimes compared to native-born citizens, highlighting a significant cultural and societal disparity.

The findings, which have been publicly available in Denmark for 25 years, have sparked renewed calls for transparency in the UK, where Labour has been accused of withholding similar data. Conservative MPs, including Neil O'Brien, have criticized Labour leader Keir Starmer for failing to release the statistics, arguing that transparency is essential for informed public debate.

The Danish data, which adjusts for age demographics to ensure fair comparisons, shows that men born in Lebanon, Somalia, and Iraq have significantly higher crime rates than native Danes. For example, Lebanon-born men had an age-adjusted crime index score of 265 in 2024, meaning they were 2.65 times more likely to be convicted of a crime compared to the general male population in Denmark.

Descendants of immigrants, including those born in Denmark but with non-Danish parents, had an even higher score of 386. In contrast, Danish males scored 92, below the baseline of 100. The age-adjusted crime index accounts for the fact that younger age groups, which are statistically more prone to criminal activity, are more prevalent in some immigrant populations. This adjustment ensures a fairer comparison across different nationalities.

Out of the 31 countries listed in Denmark's crime table, Denmark ranked 17th, with many Middle Eastern and African nations occupying the top spots. Danish officials attribute these differences to varying societal standards among immigrant groups. The data has bolstered public support in Denmark for stricter migration policies, including bans on the burka and laws aimed at preventing the formation of ghettos. Despite Denmark's traditionally left-leaning reputation, the country has adopted hardline measures to address integration challenges.

In the UK, the lack of comparable data has led researchers to rely on piecemeal information to estimate crime rates among different nationalities. For instance, the Centre for Migration Control reported that Afghan nationals are 22 times more likely to be convicted of sex offences than British nationals, while the Oxford Migration Observatory estimated the rate to be 14.5 times higher.

Academics at the Oxford Migration Observatory acknowledge substantial variations in incarceration rates by nationality, despite the inconsistencies in UK data. A previous investigation by the Daily Mail, using prison and Census data, found that Albanians had the highest crime rate among all nationalities, ten times higher than that of British nationals. Henrik Dahl, a member of the European Parliament for the Danish Liberal Alliance, emphasized the importance of such data in shaping democratic policies.

He stated that the data helps inform decisions on granting permits to individuals from countries with higher crime rates, ensuring that migration policies are based on evidence rather than speculation
