Prince William Pays Up To £7 Million in Income Tax, Report Reveals
Prince WilliamIncome TaxDuchy Of Cornwall

A new report indicates Prince William's income tax contributions reach up to £7 million annually, placing him in the top 0.002% of UK taxpayers. The income stems primarily from the Duchy of Cornwall, and the revelations come amid scrutiny of royal estate finances and their dealings with public bodies.

Prince William , the heir to the British throne, is now estimated to be contributing a substantial amount to the UK’s tax revenue, with annual income tax payments potentially reaching up to £7 million.

This places him firmly within the top 0.002 percent of taxpayers in the nation, a figure revealed in a recent report that sheds light on the financial arrangements of the royal family. While the Prince of Wales has historically maintained privacy regarding his tax contributions, it is now understood that he consistently pays the top rate of income tax, currently 45 percent.

The primary source of William’s income is the Duchy of Cornwall, a significant private estate valued at approximately £1.1 billion. This estate generates over £20 million annually, providing a considerable income stream for the Prince. The Duchy operates as a self-sufficient entity, managing a diverse portfolio of land, property, and investments. The income derived from the Duchy is used to fund the Prince’s public, private, and charitable activities.

The increased scrutiny surrounding the royal family’s finances stems from recent disclosures regarding the Duchy of Cornwall and the Duchy of Lancaster – another estate supporting the monarch. Both Duchies have been found to generate revenue by charging public bodies, including vital institutions like the National Health Service (NHS), the armed forces, and schools, for the use of their land and properties. This practice has raised questions about potential conflicts of interest and the fairness of these financial arrangements.

While legally permissible, the charging of public funds by royal estates has sparked debate about transparency and accountability. King Charles III previously volunteered information about his tax payments during his time as Prince of Wales, revealing a £5.9 million income tax contribution on Duchy earnings for the financial year 2021-2022.

However, since ascending to the throne, and similarly for Prince William, detailed tax arrangements have not been publicly disclosed. Despite this lack of public reporting, it is believed that William adheres to a similar financial approach as his father, consistently paying the highest applicable rate of income tax. In the financial year 2023-24, marking William’s first full year overseeing the Duchy of Cornwall, his total income reached £23.6 million.

Of this amount, approximately £13.5 million is considered taxable income, resulting in an estimated tax bill ranging from £5 million to £7 million, as reported by the Sunday Times. This substantial contribution underscores the significant financial impact of the Duchy of Cornwall and the Prince’s commitment to fulfilling his tax obligations.

It’s important to note that, under an agreement established in 2013 between the late Queen Elizabeth II and the Treasury, the monarch is not legally required to pay income tax, capital gains tax, or inheritance tax. This exemption is rooted in the historical understanding that the monarch’s income is considered a public service, and the revenue generated by the Crown Estate is already paid to the Treasury.

Similarly, Prince William is not legally obligated to pay income tax on the funds he receives directly from the Duchy of Cornwall. The Duchy itself has a long and storied history, originating in 1337 when Prince Edward III established it to provide financial support for his son, Prince Edward, ensuring the future financial security of the heir to the throne.

The Duchy’s enduring purpose remains the same today – to provide independent income to the Prince of Wales and support his duties
