) - A team at UAB performed the state’s first deceased donor bone marrow transplant , expanding treatment options for patients with blood cancer . UAB says physicians at the Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine led the procedure in collaboration with specialists across leukemia care, radiation oncology, transplant coordination, and cellular therapy.
Nearly 20,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed each year with blood cancers that could require a bone marrow transplant. Normally, living donors are needed, and finding the right match can take critical time that some patients don’t have. By using stem cells from deceased donors, they can be preserved and made readily available when timing is most critical. Dr. Omer Jamy said this is still a very new procedure, performed only a handful of times anywhere in the country.
“We have patients from different backgrounds over here, and sometimes we struggle to find good living donors for them,” Jamy said. “So this just gives us an opportunity to explore another donor pool and offer therapy to more of those patients. We don’t want the lack of a donor to be a reason for them not to get this therapy.
