Gang Green’s quarterback situation is as unresolved as ever despite the acquisition of old friend Geno Smith from the Las Vegas Raiders last month. A legitimate franchise staple under center has eluded the franchise for decades, and all signs were pointing to the Jets spending 2026 in the doldrums to get a crack at the No. 1 pick in 2027 and, say, Oregon quarterback Dante Moore.reports that New York could use either its No. 16 or No. 33 pick later this week to take Simpson and try to develop him into that missing piece while spending the year sitting behind Smith. The Jets flew down to Alabama for a private workout with Simpson last month after meeting with him at the NFL Combine in late February. At 23 years old, Simpson started just one season for the Crimson Tide, going 11-4 with 3,567 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and five interceptions. The Arizona Cardinals are another team believed to be in on Simpson after releasing Kyler Murray, who subsequently signed with the Minnesota Vikings. They hold the Nos. 3 and 33 picks at the draft. The Los Angeles Rams were also seen as a potential suitor for Simpson as Matthew Stafford’s successor, but they traded their No. 29 overall pick to the Kansas City Chiefs for cornerback Trent McDuffie.
