The San Diego Padres suffered a 3-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Monday, continuing their struggles against starting pitchers. Despite a solo home run by Jackson Merrill and a late rally, the Padres' offense failed to generate consistent production. The team's unusual split in performance against starters and relievers remains a key concern as they prepare to face Logan Webb next.
The San Diego Padres faced another disappointing loss on Monday night, falling 3-2 to the San Francisco Giants despite a strong start from rookie pitcher Trevor McDonald.
The Padres' offense struggled throughout the game, managing only two runs—a solo home run by Jackson Merrill in the first inning and another by Ramón Laureano in the ninth. Merrill, who has shown signs of improvement in his plate discipline, went 1-for-4 with a home run, continuing his recent hot streak.
However, the rest of the lineup failed to capitalize against McDonald, who dominated with his sinker and slider, holding the Padres to just three hits over seven innings. This performance marked the 16th quality start the Padres have faced this season, highlighting their ongoing struggles against starting pitchers. The Padres' batting average against starters sits at a meager .211 with a .608 OPS, compared to a more respectable .255 average and .771 OPS against relievers.
This trend is unusual, as relievers typically pose a greater challenge due to their high-velocity arms and sharp offspeed pitches. Xander Bogaerts acknowledged the anomaly, stating, 'Relievers are supposed to be the tough ones. You’re not supposed to be able to scrap a lot together.
' The Padres have managed to secure 20 wins this season, with half of those victories coming in late innings, often overcoming deficits or breaking ties in the seventh inning or later. While this resilience has kept them in contention with the National League’s fifth-best record, the team recognizes that their reliance on late-game heroics is unsustainable. Craig Stammen, a veteran reliever, expressed the team’s frustration, saying, 'We’re definitely racking our brains and trying to figure out why that is.
I think a lot of teams feel really good about the guys they are bringing in from the bullpen—high-velocity arms and good offspeed pitches. You know, the starters in this league are good also. We just haven’t hit our stride early in games yet.
' The Padres have faced a disproportionate number of elite sinkerball pitchers this season, a challenge that has stifled their offense. Stammen emphasized the need to adapt, stating, 'We’ve got to find a way to handle these guys that come in with a sinker-slider combo; that’s just part of what this season is going to bring for this team. We’re going to keep working. Those guys are going to keep working.
Eventually we’ll figure it out.
' Merrill remains optimistic, believing that the team’s struggles will ultimately make them stronger. 'I think it all helps at the end of the day,' he said. 'It’s still early in the year, so there is still time. We can build on this and move forward.
But I do think we’ve faced a lot of good arms. So, you know, I think it’s gonna pay off at some point.
' The Padres will look to bounce back on Tuesday night when they face Logan Webb, one of the league’s top sinkerball pitchers. Webb previously held the Padres to three runs in six innings earlier this season, and the team will need to find a way to break through against his formidable repertoire
