A 27-year-old gunman opened fire inside a Midtown Manhattan office building, killing four people and wounding a fifth before taking his own life. Authorities believe he targeted the NFL headquarters and carried a note mentioning CTE.

A gunman killed four people and wounded a fifth before taking his own life inside a Midtown Manhattan office building on Monday. Police sources told ABC News that the 27-year-old shooter, identified as Travis Tamura , appeared to be targeting the NFL headquarters and carried a note in his pocket mentioning chronic traumatic encephalopathy ( CTE ). Tamura drove across the country with a semiautomatic rifle and opened fire at the building, which houses NFL offices, officials said.

Authorities revealed Tamura immediately opened fire on an NYPD officer Upon entering the building and then shot a woman who tried to take cover. He then proceeded to spray the lobby with gunfire, fatally shooting a security guard at the elevator bank. Tamura's erratic actions are captured in eerie surveillance footage, where it is seen that he allowed a woman to exit an elevator, sparing her from being shot. Authorities stated Tamura took an elevator to the 33rd floor, where Rudin Management is located, and shot another victim before ultimately dying by suicide. While it appeared Tamura took the wrong elevator bank to reach the NFL HQ, it was at Rudin Management where he carried out additional shootings, claiming the lives of four individuals. The victims included a building security guard, a Blackstone executive who was also a mother, a NYPD officer who was a father of two, and a young employee at Rudin Management. A fifth victim, an NFL employee according to Commissioner Roger Goodell, was injured and taken to the hospital in critical condition. Thankfully, that victim's condition was later upgraded to stable on Tuesday morning. \A note found in Tamura's pocket contained a series of disturbing allegations. One page accused the NFL of concealing the dangers to players' brains from playing football in order to maximize profits. Another page mentioned CTE and blamed football, while the final page asked, 'Study my brain please. I'm sorry.' CTE is a degenerative brain disease linked to repeated hits to the head, often seen in military veterans and athletes, including football players, hockey players, and boxers. While Tamura played high school football in Los Angeles, he had no known connection to the NFL. Although it remains unconfirmed if Tamura suffered from CTE, doctors can suspect it based on symptoms and a history of head trauma. Tamura's brain will be examined as part of his autopsy. Authorities traced Tamura's journey through multiple states, beginning with Las Vegas, Nevada, where he was employed as a surveillance department employee at the Horseshoe hotel and casino. Police found that his BMW entered New York on Monday - just two hours before the shooting. Further investigation revealed that Tamura had two Mental Health Crisis Holds in his background in Nevada in 2022 and 2024, indicating potential mental health struggles that were acknowledged but not addressed effectively. \The weapon used in the shooting was identified as an M4-style semiautomatic Palmetto State Armory PA-15 rifle equipped with a scope and a barrel flashlight. Tamura's car also contained a loaded Colt Python .357 caliber revolver, ammunition, medication, and two cellphones. Tamura legally purchased the .357 revolver using his Nevada concealed carry permit, which he obtained in 2022. Authorities are now reviewing if adequate measures were taken in Nevada to prevent this shooting. A tip was called in at a Las Vegas gun show in June, alerting authorities that Tamura had purchased large amounts of ammunition and an aftermarket trigger. This information, unfortunately, did not prevent the tragedy. New York Governor Kathy Hochul, calling for an assault weapons ban, emphasized New York's existing strict gun laws and urged stronger action to prevent future tragedies like this
