The Philadelphia Flyers have made a significant move in their ongoing rebuild, trading forwards Travis Farabee and Morgan Frost to the Calgary Flames . In return, the Flyers received winger Andrei Kuzmenko , center Jakob Pelletier , a 2025 second-round draft pick, and a 2028 seventh-round draft pick. Farabee and Frost, both first-round selections of the Flyers, were once considered potential cornerstone pieces for the franchise.
However, they faced challenges in meeting expectations during the past two seasons, leading to their status as trade candidates. Farabee, who turns 25 next month, was entering the third year of a six-year, $30 million contract. Frost, also 25, was a pending restricted free agent in the final year of his two-year, $4.2 million deal. The Flyers, who have taken a step back this season, are looking to create more flexibility and cap space for the future. This trade provides them with valuable assets to pursue their rebuilding goals. The acquisition of the second-round pick gives the Flyers a total of seven selections in the first two rounds of the 2025 draft (three first-rounders, four second-rounders). Kuzmenko, a Russian winger who turns 29 next week, is on an expiring contract with a $5.5 million cap hit, making him an unrestricted free agent in the offseason. He had a breakout rookie season in 2022-23 with the Vancouver Canucks, recording 39 goals and 74 points. This season with the Flames, he has four goals and 11 assists in 37 games. Pelletier, 23, also joins the Flyers on an expiring contract. He's a pending restricted free agent who was a first-round pick of Calgary in 2019. He had 11 points (four goals, seven assists) and a plus-10 rating in 24 games this season
