Prodigy Clean Energy's TNPP microreactor is deployable even in the harsh Arctic climates of Canada's North.
Canadian firm Prodigy Clean Energy has announced the completion of a two-year R&D program designed to advance its transportable power plant technology. The company’s Transportable Nuclear Power Plant is a type of small modular reactor that is deployable in remote regions.
The technology could provide energy for military bases as well as poor and difficult-to-access regions in need of electricity.Providing clean power in Canada’s NorthProviding energy in Canada’s North is particularly challenging due to the region’s extreme remoteness and harsh Arctic climate. Due to these conditions, the region is reliant on expensive and polluting diesel fuel transported by truck, plane or barge. The cold weather also makes it difficult to integrate battery technologies into the region’s infrastructure.According to a Prodigy press statement, “baseload clean power is needed to increase essential services and infrastructure for off-grid Indigenous communities, including food and clean water security; enable upgrading and expansion of Canadian Forces and Coast Guard installations, Arctic ports and trade corridors; and to expand opportunities for the advancement of Canada’s Critical Minerals Strategy.”To that end, the Government of Canada has provided 2.75 million Canadian dollars of investment to Prodigy under its Enabling Small Modular Reactors program. According to the firm’s statement, these funds were aimed at accelerating the completion of the “latest phase of R&D that demonstrates TNPP maturity and readiness for use in off-grid microreactor projects.”Prodigy’s TRISO-fueled TNPPs are a type of microreactor that allows customers to customize their small reactors by gross power output and energy type. Microreactors are capable of generating constant emission-free energy, making them ideal for these remote regions. Combining nuclear tech with maritime efficiencyBuilding microreactors in Northern regions poses a set of unique challenges. The lack of transportation infrastructure typically increases construction costs, while extreme weather typically limits construction windows. Permafrost thaw also causes structural challenges. In order to address these issues, Prodigy combines proven nuclear technologies with maritime factory fabrication, transport, and construction practices. According to the company’s statement, it provides a fully-assembled nuclear plant. “Upon arrival, the plant is fixed in place within a protected enclosure at the shoreline, either in a marine harbour or on land. Fueling and final commissioning are completed at the site before beginning power generation.”The TNPP is also designed to be completely removed and decommissioned at the end of its service life. This greatly reduces environmental concerns related to legacy waste.“To become a clean energy superpower, we need to deploy affordable, reliable, clean Canadian energy from coast to coast to coast—especially in rural, northern and remote regions, where there can be fewer options for families,” said Tim Hodgson, Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources.“That is why our new government is proud to support projects like Prodigy’s Transportable Nuclear Power Plant,” Hodgson said. “By advancing promising Canadian technologies such as Prodigy’s, we are supporting economic growth in the North while strengthening Canada’s energy security.”
