A detailed analysis of the newly revealed trailer for , highlighting both its impressive graphical improvements and concerns about the potential lack of a dynamic, interactive world, similar to its predecessors.
The initial reveal of during the Pokémon Presents filled me with overwhelming joy and excitement. I found myself rewatching the trailer repeatedly, captivated by the details and eager to explore its vibrant world. However, after further reflection, some concerns have emerged. It is crucial not to judge a game solely based on a brief trailer. Therefore, I will refrain from making sweeping statements or succumbing to my worries that it will disappoint, as that would be unfair.
Despite this, one aspect of the game design gives me pause, a feature I have long hoped Game Freak would improve. \ has an opportunity to rectify the mistakes of its Nintendo Switch predecessors, but my apprehension stems from the possibility that it might stumble at the final hurdle. The noticeable graphical improvement initially impressed me. It's undeniable that the game looks significantly better than its predecessors, and based on the brief glimpses we've seen, it doesn't seem plagued by technical issues. I was impressed with Game Freak's utilization of the Switch 2's power. Yet, a closer examination of the trailer reveals limitations in showcasing its world. The archipelago appears remarkably lifeless. We see Pokémon swimming and roaming, hinting at the types we can expect, but there's a lack of human activity. Even in the wider shots, settlements and towns seem devoid of life, and Pokémon mostly move passively without interacting with their surroundings. The animations shown in previous games demonstrated how dynamic the world could feel. With a year until launch, Game Freak may be holding back on these aspects, focusing on water physics and starters. \If the NPCs and world lack interactivity, following its predecessors, impressive visuals and water physics will be insufficient. While I am not inherently negative, my concerns are based on the gameplay shown. I am genuinely invested in the series, having spent countless hours on each entry, even though the issues persist. What I wish for the series to have the best chance at improving is a dynamic world that feels alive. approach to open-world design felt very much rooted in past philosophies, and it caused it to be mind-numbingly boring as a result. Trainers standing around looking blankly into the distance and Pokémon bobbing around tall grass is really no different from how the Game Boy Advance games approached region design. If adheres to the bare minimum in open-world design, Pokémon may feel like a decent game, which is all anyone asks for. The Pokémon Company may not prioritize technical complexity, which isn't needed to improve its gameplay loop, but a dynamic world is a basic open-world design element, which Game Freak needs to implement. Given the upcoming release date, Game Freak can absolutely implement this kind of design
