I-71 and I-670 Interchange Named One of Ohio's Most Stressful Off-Ramps

A study by Regan Zambri Long identified the I-71 Exit 109 connector to I-670 in Columbus as the third-most stressful off-ramp in Ohio due to high traffic volume and short merge lanes.

The I-71 Exit 109 interchange connecting to I-670 was named the third-most stressful off-ramp in Ohio , according to a new study released Wednesday. The ranking comes from a poll of more than 3,000 drivers conducted by the law firm Regan Zambri Long, which identified interchanges where traffic patterns, short merge lanes, and high volume create daily "flashpoints" for motorists.

In Columbus, the I-71 and I-670 connector is a vital artery for commuters moving through the downtown loop. The firm says Ohio drivers report transitioning between the two heavily traveled routes often forces rapid lane sorting and frequent braking as traffic compresses during peak travel hours.

“These exits aren’t just frustrating—they’re where a lot of collisions happen,” said Patrick Regan of Regan Zambri Long. “When traffic compresses and drivers are forced to react quickly, it increases the likelihood of rear-end crashes and sudden lane conflicts. ” The Columbus interchange was surpassed in stress levels only by Cleveland’s I-480 Exit 16 and Cincinnati’s I-75 Exit 16 to I-275, which took the top spot in the state.

According to the study, the I-71 ramp fills quickly during rush hour, leaving drivers with limited space to make navigational decisions. This congestion often leads to risky driving behaviors, including aggressive lane cutting and abrupt stops. Transportation experts note that such interchanges often see higher accident rates because the transition from high-speed freeway travel to local street patterns happens within a very short distance.
