Trader Joe’s has agreed to pay $7.4 million to settle a class action lawsuit claiming some receipts showed too many digits of customers’ card numbers.
Some Trader Joe’s shoppers could be eligible for part of a major payout. Trader Joe’s has agreed to pay $7.4 million to settle a class action lawsuit claiming some receipts showed too many digits of customers’ card numbers.
Customers who used a credit or debit card while shopping at Trader Joe’s between March 5, 2019, and July 19, 2019, could be entitled to a part of the settlement. The class action lawsuit alleged that receipts in some Trader Joe’s stores displayed the first four and last six digits of a card number, violating the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act .
Although Trader Joe’s denied the allegations, the company chose to settle in order to avoid a lengthy and “expensive” legal fight. “By entering into the settlement, Trader Joe’s has not conceded the truth or validity of any of the claims against it,”Trader Joe’s said no one has reported a case of identity theft linked to the receipts.
The company added that there does not need to be a case of identity theft for someone to file a FACTA lawsuit. The $7.4 million will go to paying settlements to class members who file claims, as well as attorneys’ fees and a $10,000 incentive payment to Brian Keim, who initially sued Trader Joe’s. The exact amount will depend on how many people file a claim.
Customers have until June 6 to submit.
