This article was updated with new information in April 2026. Every truck owner has pondered purchasing a tonneau cover at some point. Feelings about them vary.

Some argue that they're the best way to protect your belongings from the elements and sneaky thieves; others feel they're simply an unnecessary add-on. In our anecdotal experience, tonneau covers seem to be gaining popularity, nearly to the point where they're synonymous with a shiny new truck. Which one should you get?

There's a wide variety of styles to choose from, ranging from hard tops to soft tops, roll-ups, and more.

Pros and cons come naturally with each type, so the best option comes down to your own needs, including protection level and ease of access. While it might be daunting to find the right one, have faith—the right option is out there for you. We tested and reviewed several different types to help you understand which ones might fit your needs best. That way, you can shop informed and make the right purchase the first time.

More Pickup Truck Gear: Best Truck Tires | Best Truck Toolboxes | Best Truck Running BoardsTo test tonneau covers in real-world conditions, we ran examples of six types of tonneaus through our own testing, then had them installed and evaluated by real pickup-truck owners. We gathered feedback from our testers on quality, value, and real-world performance, and reported accordingly.

Because personal preference of tonneau covers is so subjective, rather than awarding the 'best' of each type of cover below, we focused our test results on the pros and cons of each type and recommended our favorites among each. Here's what we found. The Best Tonneau Covers of 2026, Tested GatorTrax Manual Retractable Tonneau Cover Perhaps the best-looking option we reviewed, the GatorTrax Manual Retractable Tonneau Cover rocks a sleek and clean appearance.

But how did the installation process go to achieve this look? Our tester noted slight damage to the box upon arrival, but the contents were in perfect shape. Upon scanning the instructions, everything was straightforward except for step six—the heading 'Remove and Position the Rails' was a bit confusing. Our tester recommended it be changed to 'Canister and Rail Placement' for better clarity.

Once assembled, the unit was placed onto the rails and slid into place, requiring only minor adjustments. The clamps were easy to install and needed only a slight tightening during the final fitment work. The total installation time from unboxing to finish was one hour and 20 minutes. An additional person to help is recommended.

The locking mechanism feels robust, while the cover itself glides nicely on the rails. Further testing uncovered water intrusion spots at the cabin-side corners and edges.

Additionally, the cover holds water and, upon rolling up, leaks extensively from the canister. This can be fixed by adding a drain tube, which unfortunately requires drilling into your truck bed.

Additionally, while this cover is advertised as lockable in any position, our tester was never able to achieve this, being able to lock it only fully closed and fully open. Overall, the GatorTrax looks excellent and boasts a relatively simple installation. The water intrusion could be an issue for some, especially without routing a drain from the canister to the outside of the bed. Unfortunately, waterproofing a tonneau cover is extremely challenging, as we found with most of these examples.

But for a great-looking retractable tonneau cover, the GatorTrax fits the bill. Vehicle: 2021 Chevy Colorado Z71 8-month update from product tester:'The roller top has loosened up a bit, which is a good thing. It's much easier to move. No new leaks.

Love the security aspect of it.

'The 12-inch roller case at the bulkhead of the bed is a bit inconvenient sometimes, but not enough to hate it. . . .

That's really the only downside.

' Worksport SC3 Soft Tonneau Cover For those shopping for a soft trifold option, we tested the Worksport SC3 Tonneau Cover on an '06 Dodge Dakota. Right off the bat, the installation time was outstanding, clocking in at just 15 minutes, with an additional 15 for unpacking and setup. Constructed with tough, weather-resistant vinyl, the budget-friendly SC3 looks pretty sharp too.

While installation and price are two excellent perks with this tonneau cover, there are some things we found in our testing to be aware of. First, the trifolds are large and take up a lot of space when fully folded up against the rear panel, which can make transporting things such as a motorcycle or large furniture next to impossible. Surprisingly, the folds are quite light, and one person can easily flip them.

The security straps tend to slide on the cover's bar, which could eventually slide out of reach and cause an issue. Additionally, we identified a few problem spots with water intrusion, namely from the tailgate and a clip on each side that caused a slight bump that exposed outside air. Perhaps the most frustrating parts of this cover are the clamps toward the tailgate that hold the cover closed.

For whatever reason, they're a bit finicky; the clamps must be in a certain position each time before latching. Most covers allow you simply to close them without a second thought, but the SC3 requires an extra look to verify the clamp's position. It's not detrimental to the operation of the cover, just a nuisance. All in all, the SC3 is an admirable option if you're looking for a budget-friendly, easy-to-install tonneau cover for your truck.

Vehicle: 2006 Dodge Dakota SLT 8-month update from product tester:'It seems to be holding up well to the weather elements of the seasons.

' UnderCover SE One Piece Tonneau Cover The RealTruck UnderCover SE One Piece Tonneau Cover is a sleek, secure, and weather-resistant tonneau cover that's available for a variety of vehicles. Installation was a two-person job but fairly straightforward thanks to the no-drill design. While tools were required, none came in the package. Once installed, the cover sat flush and required zero adjustments, even after months of testing.

Despite its relatively lightweight construction, the cover felt solid and secure. It features a keyed lock for added protection. One standout feature is the integrated LED light, which makes it easy to access cargo in low-light conditions. Driving with the cover was a quiet experience—no rattling or wind noise at highway speeds, according to our tester.

Our tester pressure-washed the truck and cover, and the cover proved almost entirely weatherproof, even under direct spray. The generous overhang and integrated seals kept the bed protected, making this cover a great choice for those who need the contents of their bed to stay dry.

However, like all one-piece tonneau covers, it limits cargo height and overall capacity since it doesn't fold or roll up. We also needed to open the cover before lowering the tailgate on a Silverado , which may be a minor inconvenience for some. The integrated struts do make this easier though.

For truck owners who prioritize security, ease of use, and weather resistance, the RealTruck UnderCover SE is a fantastic choice—just be sure to have your own tools handy for installation. Vehicle: 2021 Ford F-150 XLT8-month update from product tester:'Nothing to report. Everything has been great.

' Worksport AL3 Pro Quick Latch Hard Tonneau Cover The Worksport AL3 Pro Quick Latch Hard Tonneau Cover is a lightweight, easy-to-install option for truck owners who want quick bed access with minimal hassle. Overall, the installation was relatively effortless for one person. It comes with an allen wrench for assembly, though there's a chance you'll need a 10-mm wrench to fine-tune the latches to the frame of the bed. The cover arrived well packaged with solid protection.

Our test unit did have a rip in the cardboard, but thanks to the quality packaging, the unit was unharmed. The quick-latch system and cable release made this cover one of the easier options on our list to open and close. It's worth noting, though, that the cover doesn't fold all the way, limiting access to the full bed .

The unit leaked a bit at the corners of the bed, so it's not entirely waterproof, but it should keep most of the elements out. When fully secured, it feels sturdy but not necessarily super locked down, so you might not want to keep valuable gear inside all the time, yet overall, it keeps the bed contents out of view of would-be thieves.

We also wouldn't recommend placing heavy items atop the closed cover, as it doesn't feel as though it could hold too much weight, particularly if it's centered and not supported by the edge of the bed. Overall, for those who want an affordable, lightweight, and easy-to-use tonneau cover with quick access, the Worksport AL3 Pro is a solid contender—just keep in mind its water-resistance and security limitations.

Vehicle: 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ TruXedo TruXport Tonneau Cover If you're looking for a reasonably priced, easy-to-install option that provides full accessibility to your truck bed, this soft-rolling RealTruck TruXedo TruXport Tonneau Cover is a solid choice. Right off the bat, we found that the cover was extremely light.

For increased support, though, it's equipped with three metal rods spaced evenly along the cover in case of snow or something heavy sitting on the top of the cover while it's unrolled. Installation took roughly an hour with one person. A couple of quirks we discovered: Latching the cover requires a bit of extra effort, as does getting an even roll-up .

But once it's rolled, you can clasp it tightly into place. The cover also actually 'pops' open as it's unlatched, which was odd yet slightly satisfying. According to the instructions, the spring mechanism is at the correct tension, and any tampering with it will result in a void of warranty. The cover also looks pretty sharp once it's fully secured , and the Velcro seal keeps it from buffeting much in the wind.

The weatherproofing, however, is not completely successful. We spotted some water inside the bed after installation, and our flashlight test confirmed there were some vulnerable areas. Lastly, the tailgate must be open to operate the cover, and it's not the most theft-resistant choice, but it is definitely a great option if you value simplicity. Vehicle: 2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport8-month update from product tester:'So far, it's held up great!

No sag or permanent creases. The locking mechanism still works like new. It has definitely faded a little under the sun, but I also haven't done much to maintain the shine it had when I installed it.

' Bak Revolver X4s Tonneau Cover This cover is significantly more expensive than the soft-roll option, but for some, it might just be worth it. We installed this RealTruck BAK Revolver X4s Tonneau Cover atop our long-term 2024 Ford Maverick and put it to the test. It still offers accessibility to nearly the entire bed but with increased structural rigidity and security.

Installation was more of a challenge, and although it can be done solo, it's easier as a two-person job. Fastening the cover to the frame rails was a bit of a pain because of the size and resistance of the knobs, and the sticky seal backing wasn't very easy to remove. It also needed quite a lot of adjusting to get the perfect fitment, resulting in about an hour and a half for the entire process.

To release the cover, it takes a decent yank on the cord, but after it's unlatched, it rolls up seamlessly. However, because it's thicker than a soft-rolling cover, rear visibility is significantly affected when it's fully coiled. In its unfurled position, though, it looks very clean and doesn't flap around in the wind the way a soft cover might. It can also be closed with the tailgate up, which might prove useful.

In our testing, we found that the cover isn't completely weatherproof, but it's close. There was only a small amount of water in the bed and along the edges after it had been exposed to the elements. Aside from some minor gripes, this option is one of our favorites. With a high-quality look and feel, it's great for everyday use.

Vehicle: 2024 Ford Maverick XLT Hybrid Types of Tonneau Covers Soft Roll-UpThese covers are made from pliable materials such as vinyl and can be manually rolled up toward the cabin. They're lightweight, affordable, and easy to install, making them ideal for budget-conscious users who need basic protection from the elements but also want the flexibility of a nearly fully uncovered bed when needed.

However, they aren't as secure as their hard counterparts, so they may not hold up against harsh weather conditions—or theft. Hard Roll-UpThis design combines convenience with enhanced protection against impacts and theft. While hard roll-up covers are versatile and secure, they are typically more expensive and heavier than soft roll-up covers, yet they still give you the flexibility of a fully open bed when you want it.

Thanks to their sturdier materials, these covers offer more durability and security than soft tonneau covers. Folding This option comes in both soft and hard versions, allowing for partial bed access by folding up in sections.

However, the folding design can limit bed access—and when fully retracted toward the cab may block your rearview or take up a third of the vertical overhead space. Another note is that the space it frees up is fixed by the folded sections, meaning the available bed space isn't customizable. RetractableRetractable covers offer adjustable bed access by locking in various positions.

Usually made of hard materials such as aluminum, these covers, when closed, provide excellent security and a sleek, low-profile appearance. When it's open, the slats are rolled and compacted into a canister behind the truck's cab. Some even offer power opening and closing. The canister is the biggest downside of this style since it can take up considerable space.

Additionally, retractables can be one of the more expensive tonneau options, often requiring in-depth and even professional installation. Hinged A hinged-style cover is made up of a single panel that lifts like the hood of a car, providing full bed access. These covers are extremely secure and weatherproof, making them great for protection against the elements and theft, and pricier versions can often be color-matched to your vehicle's paint for a sleek look.

However, their rigid, lifted design only allows for partial access, and they can be cumbersome to remove when transporting large items, such as tall furniture and appliances such as refrigerators. Snap-On Snap-on covers are soft tonneau covers that attach to the truck bed using snap fasteners. They're lightweight and generally considered easy to use, install, and remove. They're also one of the most budget-friendly options.

However, the material and the snaps can wear out over time, making the cover less durable. They also offer less protection and security than other types of tonneaus. Most truck experts don't recommend snap-on tonneaus, and neither do we, so we opted not to test this style here. Still, if you're looking for an inexpensive, temporary solution, a snap-on might be an option.

Things to Consider When Purchasing a Tonneau Cover Weather ResistanceWeather resistance is a key reason people use a tonneau cover—protecting your bed and its contents from the elements is crucial. Hard tonneau covers tend to be best for this, and high marks in this category earn strong kudos in our books. Ease of InstallationMost tonneau covers are designed to be DIY-friendly, but this can depend on your confidence with tools.

It's never a bad idea to call in a knowledgeable helper for situations like this to tackle installation. This choice comes down to you, a mirror, and a good, long look at yourself. If you think it's out of your wheelhouse, consider professional installation, since you're already spending a pretty penny to kit out your truck.

SecurityKeeping your belongings safe is another key benefit of a tonneau cover, and hardcover options work best for this, especially if they feature a locking mechanism. Soft covers are less secure; one quick slice with a knife, and you can say sayonara to the contents of your pickup-truck bed. AccessibilityActually getting access to your truck's bed is another consideration to keep in mind. How often will you need to open and close the cover?

Folding and soft retractable covers offer better accessibility than one-piece or hinged options, but this can come at the cost of either security or rear-window view quality. SizeThis might seem obvious, but triple-check the size you need. The links we've included in this article might not fit your specific truck. Before you click that final purchase button, always make sure you're buying the correct tonneau cover for your pickup's precise make, model, and year.

How We Tested Tonneau Covers While we usually have access to a variety of vehicles here at Car and Driver, getting six pickup trucks at once to alter with aftermarket accessories isn't an easy ask. So we looked outside our fleet and enlisted a group of pickup-driving enthusiasts who let us install tonneau covers on their trucks.

To ensure thorough and unbiased evaluations, testers were given products in exchange for their time and feedback, and they'll keep the bed covers for their personal use. Once each person received their cover, they installed them independently, without the presence of a Gear Team editor, and timed their installation process, while documenting any difficulties and ease of installation.

Each truck owner was given a list of questions and submitted detailed responses via an online survey, accompanied by before and after photos, ensuring a clear record of everyone's installation experience. The next step was to visit and evaluate these covers in person. We spoke with the testers about their experience with installation, looked at the covers for ourselves, and conducted some tests.

One was the Water Resistance Test, in which we sprayed a set amount of water on each cover and observed any water intrusion. This, along with observations by the testers going through car washes, gave us an idea of whether the covers were waterproof. For an even closer look at the cover's seals, we opted to test for leak points with a high-powered flashlight and a tester inside the bed with the cover closed.

With this perspective, we were able to check for light intrusion and, therefore, the problem spots for potential water leakage. Testers also performed a Dust and Dirt Exposure Test by driving unpaved roads and inspecting for contamination inside the truck bed. They shared their findings through survey responses and additional photographs.

Long-term Durability Testing will be conducted through periodic check-ins at one and three months, during which testers will share insights on wear and tear, including any creases or hinge functionality issues. FAQs What is a tonneau cover? A tonneau cover is simply a protective cover for your truck bed. People use them for various reasons, mainly to protect their beds from wandering eyes or weather, or to provide containment.

Are tonneau covers waterproof? We actually tested this, and the answer is technically, no. While most are water resistant, we'd be apprehensive about calling any completely waterproof. High-end models will have seals to minimize leaks, but don't expect perfection. How can I make sure the tonneau cover fits my truck?

Most websites will ask you to input your make, model, and bed size, and then they will spit out the correct model for you. But it's always a good idea to cross-compare the listing size with your truck's bed. Can I install the cover myself? While we can only speak to the models we tested in this article, the general feedback is that you absolutely can do this.

Some may require an extra set of hands, but we are confident you can perform the installation without the help of a professional. Can I drive with the tonneau cover open? This will depend on the model, but we recommend that you use any securement straps that may be provided. As a general rule, yes, you can.

Are tonneau covers secure? Yes! Anything that covers your truck bed makes it that much more secure.

However, harder covers will be far more effective against a determined thief, as they tend to have locking mechanisms that make breaking in a real affair. Softer covers, on the other hand, could be as easy for a bad guy as cutting the vinyl and running away with your belongings. Can I use a tonneau cover with a fifth-wheel trailer? Sure!

It will work as long as it retracts far enough to reveal the portion of the bed needed. The main cover type you'll want to avoid if you have a fifth-wheel trailer is the hinged hard top, which is unlikely to be compatible with your ride. Does a tonneau cover improve mileage? Many people claim that tonneau covers have the handy side effect of improving a truck's aerodynamics and, therefore, its fuel economy.

Others claim any improved gas mileage is likely found only at highway speeds or negated by the added weight of the tonneau. While there are plenty of online videos and sources that claim fuel savings with a tonneau cover on, we've yet to see any solid empirical data on the subject.

For our part, we're not confident that every tonneau cover will improve every truck's mileage, but we found that the Tesla Cybertruck's standard tonneau cover improves range by 10 percent when closed. The extremely thrifty 2015 Ram HFE diesel also achieved its impressive 29-mpg EPA highway rating with an OEM-installed tonneau cover .
