The average tomato price in the U.S. has increased by more than 25% since January, up to $2.25 a pound, Mozza Pizza Owner Thomas Quijada says this has cost his two Huntsville businesses thousands of dollars.
He says as of Tuesday, they are paying almost $75 per 25 pounds of tomatoes, more than double what they paid in November.
“We use it for salads. We use it for our pizza. We use it for some of the Greek food that we sell here at Rella Gyro, so it affects us a lot,” Quijada said.
“We don’t really cut corners. We try to stay with the standard of quality, so even with the prices being so high, you know, we just take the hit and work with what we’ve got.
