Dallas-born actor Owen Wilson voices the San Antonio businessman in 'Tom Slick: Mystery Hunter,' premiering July 18.
Owen Wilson is playing San Antonio businessman, inventor and larger-than-life adventurer Tom Slick in a new scripted podcast series. The Dallas -born actor will star alongside Sissy Spacek and Schuyler Fisk in “ Tom Slick : Mystery Hunter,” iHeartMedia announced in a news release.
The eight-part podcast series is “based on the untold, mostly true tale of explorer, scientific legend and alleged spy, Tom Slick, the most interesting man you’ve never heard of,” the release says. It will be told through hidden tapes found by his granddaughter Liv Slick in her mother Claire Slick’s attic. “As they listen together, they will uncover unbelievable stories inspired by actual events from Tom Slick’s life, which include the kidnapping of his stepfather by the infamous bank robber Machine Gun Kelly, a covert OSS operation to stop a Nazi spy ring in Latin America, and his relentless hunt for the elusive Yeti,” iHeartMedia wrote. How deep the series will dive into Slick’s San Antonio ventures is unclear. Son of Thomas Baker Slick Sr., “The King of the Wildcatters” who made a fortune during the Oklahoma oil boom, Slick inherited millions as a teenager after his father’s death. While he had homes in the Alamo City, the oil heir spent much of his time gallivanting across the globe, from the Brazilian diamond hunt that ended in a plane crash to expeditions in the Pacific Northwest to search for Bigfoot. In 1941, at age 27, Slick founded the Foundation of Applied Research, which later became the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research and is now known as the Texas Biomedical Research Institute. More than a decade later, the philanthropist created San Antonio’s Mind Science Foundation to fund research into fields on the fringes of science, from cryptozoology to paranormal psychology. He was also the founder of the Texstar energy corporation and the San Antonio-based Slick Airways. It will debut on July 18 everywhere podcasts are streamed.
