The University of Texas at San Antonio is responding to criticism over its handling of the second apparent suicide of a student this year, saying that the school takes an 'intentional and proactive approach' to mental health on campus. On Nov. 6, the university announced that a 33-year-old man studying for his doctorate died that morning at the Bauerle Road Garage . In a letter to the campus community, President Taylor Eighmy confirmed that the student 'likely' died by suicide.

On a UTSA Reddit page, users spoke about long wait times for counseling and dismissive professors. 'It's not just mental health but also looking at the contributing causes to these mental health issues,' one user wrote.

The task force will report its findings to university leadership in the spring. The university sends regular reminders about mental health resources in its academic portal, which students use daily to check assignments and grades, Izbrand said.
