THOMASVILLE, Ala. A South Alabama community is mourning the loss of a Thomasville police officer killed in a crash early Wednesday morning. According to a release from the Thomasville Police Department, 25-year-old Officer Dallas Hinton was on duty around 4:45 a.m. when his vehicle was involved in a crash with an 18-wheeler.

Both vehicles were traveling north on Highway 43 in the city of Thomasville. Hinton was pronounced dead at the scene. Thomasville Fire and the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office responded, and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating the crash. The release from Thomasville PD said Hinton had been with the department for about two years.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and was honorably discharged at the end of his service. He is survived by his fiancée, his father, his sisters, and what officials described as a large law enforcement family.

“ I'm in my 30th year as mayor and this is one of the toughest situations I've ever had to face as mayor,” he said. “But one thing I can say, Thomasville is a resilient community and a loving community and everybody's loving on us. We're loving on them right now. That's what we need at the moment as we begin to try to process this tragedy this morning.

” In a small town like Thomasville, the mayor said tragedies like this often hit especially close to home for first responders.

“Unfortunately in a small town, many times it's people we know in this particular case, he's one of our police officers,” he said. “Immediately we knew who it was and it was devastating for our fellow officers, but then also our firemen, everybody involved. ” City leaders say supporting officers, first responders, and the victim’s loved ones is a top priority in the days ahead.

“In cases like this, we have to do everything we can to make sure that everybody's got somebody to talk to,” the mayor said. “We work together to make sure we're all looking out at each other if they need counseling or any support, we're there to offer it. ” Mayor Day said the availability of counseling for his first responders during times like this is something he takes pride in.

“The biggest support we have right now is everybody's loving on everybody,” he said. “I’ve had countless mayors and folks from all over the state calling and texting and offering support and that in and of itself really means a lot. ” The mayor said he has been in contact with Hinton’s family and that the city plans to support them through the difficult days ahead.

“I just got off the phone with the family letting them know that we're there for them and we're gonna do what we can to support them,” he said. “Each day is gonna be difficult and so we wanna be there for them. ” As for how Officer Hinton will be honored, the mayor said those decisions will be made alongside the family.

“We wanna make sure that decision will be made jointly with the family,” he said. “We will honor whatever their wishes are but we do want to find ways to honor his service to our community. ”Suspect detained after alleged threat to kill kids at Springhill College, St. Paul's According to MCSO, the Mobile County Sheriff's Office was notified of a potential threat toward Springhill College and St. Paul’s School.
