A former Theo Chocolate warehouse in Seattle's Fremont neighborhood is set to be transformed into a 26,500-square-foot pickleball center, riding the wave of the sport's explosive popularity. This new location will be operated by Picklr, a Utah-based indoor pickleball chain co-owned by former NFL quarterback Drew Brees.
The warehouse that once housed Theo Chocolate in Seattle 's Fremont neighborhood is getting a new life as a 26,500-square-foot pickleball center. This move comes as pickleball experiences a surge in popularity, becoming the fastest-growing sport in the U.S. Utah-based indoor pickleball chain Picklr is capitalizing on this trend, with plans to open its newest location in Seattle .
Picklr, co-owned by former NFL quarterback Drew Brees, currently operates 20 clubs across the country and has sold over 500 franchise locations worldwide. The company offers a membership model similar to a gym, providing access to nationwide facilities, free court reservations, unlimited open and competitive play, leagues, tournaments, clinics, and guest passes. Picklr's Seattle location, set to open at 124 N. 35th St., will replace the Theo Chocolate warehouse and is expected to be a welcome addition to the Fremont neighborhood, which is known for its vibrant community and the popular Fremont Sunday Street Market. Pickleball, a racket sport resembling tennis and ping-pong, can be played individually or in doubles. The sport uses smaller courts than tennis and unique paddles along with lightweight, perforated plastic balls. Originating on Bainbridge Island in 1965, pickleball has become increasingly popular in recent years, being recognized as the fastest-growing sport in the U.S. for two consecutive years. State recognition further solidified its status as Washington state's official sport in 2022. The name 'pickleball' has an interesting history, with two main accounts. One suggests it was inspired by a pickle boat in crew, where oarsmen were chosen from leftover members of other boats. Another account attributes the name to a neighborhood dog named Pickles, known for stealing the balls during games.
