The classic film 'The Enchanted Cottage,' based on Arthur Wing Pinero's play, has been added to HBO Max's streaming lineup for January 1, 2026. The 1945 adaptation, directed by John Cromwell and starring Robert Young and Dorothy McGuire, tells the story of a war-disfigured man who finds love with a housekeeper.
Another acclaimed classic has made its way to streaming, ringing in the New Year with gusto. Titled The Enchanted Cottage , the fantasy favorite is based on Arthur Wing Pinero's 1923 play and was first adapted for the silent screen in 1924.
Released on April 28, 1945, it is the second adaptation of the famous play and was followed by a third one in 2016. It's also worth noting that The Enchanted Cottage forms the basis for one of the films that Manuel Puig used to compose his novel, Kiss of the Spider Woman . As part of the January 1, 2026, lineup, The Enchanted Cottage is streaming on HBO Max, joining a boatload of classics that also arrived on the streamer the same day. John Cromwell directed the supernatural romance while DeWitt Bodeen and Herman J. Mankiewicz wrote the screenplay, with Harriet Parsons serving as producer. Starring in the pic are Dorothy McGuire, Robert Young, Herbert Marshall, Spring Byington, Mildred Natwick, Hillary Brooke, Richard Gaines and Robert Clarke, among others. For those who have yet to check out this fantasy gem, its synopsis teases:"Disfigured from wounds suffered in war, pilot Oliver Bradford runs away in shame from his beautiful fiancée and his mother . 'The Enchanted Cottage' Is Worth Watching Reports reveal that The Enchanted Cottage made a profit of $881,000 and was a critical success upon its release. On Rotten Tomatoes, the classic romance boasts a perfect 100%, with one review describing it as a"sensitive, occasionally touching romantic fable, well directed by John Cromwell and well acted by Robert Young and Dorothy McGuire."
