New Braunfels Utilities facility on Main Plaza is is likely to be sold to the city, which still could pursue plans to turn it into a boutique hotel.

The city of New Braunfels has moved a step closer to purchasing its utility’s downtown headquarters, with funding approved for the $4.55 million purchase. The city’s Economic Development Corp.’s board voted last week to approve granting the money to purchase the current 1.3-acre New Braunfels Utilities facility on Main Plaza , which would transfer ownership of the building from the city-owned utility to the city itself.

Mayor Neal Linnartz was not present when the board voted to sell the building to the city. “NBU is a utility company and economic development is not part of its core business,” NBU said in a statement. “The City of New Braunfels is in a much better position to assess its development goals and objectives and advance this type of development in a way that best suits the community.
