Early voting starts Monday for Texas’ primary runoff elections and runs through May 22. Election Day is May 26.. Ballots for Democrats and Republicans in Hays County will be short as only a few candidates for the November races remain undetermined.
This guide is here to inform you on what’s on your ballot, help you make a plan to vote and get that ‘I Voted’ sticker. Democrats will be voting for a Hays County judge candidate to face Republican Geoffrey Tahuahua in November. The runoff is between incumbent Ruben Becerra and Michelle Gutierrez Cohen, current Hays County commissioner for Precinct 2. Becerra has held the seat since 2022 but came up short of winning the primary in March.
Texas requires candidates to earn more than 50% of the vote — Becerra received 49.1% and Gutierrez Cohen received 45.4%. Democrats will also vote for a candidate for Hays County clerk, a county court-at-law position and a member for the state board of education. On the state level, Democrats will vote for a candidate for lieutenant governor andRepublicans will cast ballots for a railroad commissioner candidate, a spot on the Court of Criminal Appeals and an attorney general candidate.
Republicans will also choose their candidate for the U.S. senate race. It's between incumbent John Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. The winner will face James Talarico in November. The deadline to register for this election has passed.
If you missed the deadline, you can get registered for the next election by visiting theElection Day is Tuesday, May 26, but early voting for the runoff election starts Monday. Early voting sites will be open until Friday, May 22 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. On Election Day, polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. If you're in line by 7 p.m., you will be able to cast your ballot.

The ID must be up to date or have expired within the last four years. Voters who are over 70 can bring an ID that has been expired for any length of time.

If you use one of these, you will have to sign a form that says you had a reasonable impediment to getting an ID. Within 100 feet of a voting station, audio and camera recording is forbidden.
You can use your phone in line, as long as you’re not recording audio, video or taking photos but you can’t use it in the voting room itself. Any notes should be written or printed out on paper. Voters cannot wear any clothing that supports any party, candidate or proposition — even if they're not currently on the ballot. Not everyone is eligible to vote by mail.
You have to apply, and the deadline is Friday, May 15, at 5 p.m.are 65 or older on Election Day;are expecting to give birth within three weeks before or after Election Day. Once you get your mail-in ballot, there are some extra deadlines you should keep in mind to make sure your ballot is received on time:You can only hand deliver a mail-in ballot to the county elections office on Election Day, and you will need to show a photo ID.
A friend or relative is not allowed to turn your ballot in for you.
