Texas Lyceum poll: 63% say housing costs too much; Texans increasingly pessimistic on state economy vs. U.S., a shift from pre-2020 optimism.

Wed, May 22nd 2024 at 5:03 PMA 2023 Texas Lyceum poll found that a record high 63% of Texans , including 73% of renters, feel they pay too much for housing, and Texans are increasingly pessimistic about the state economy compared to the rest of the U.S., a departure from the optimism seen prior to 2020. releases its findings on some of the biggest issues affecting Texans , and on Wednesday, the non-partisan organization held a presentation to talk about those findings.

He told the audience that negative attitudes started picking up in 2020, the year the COVID-19 pandemic began. That year, 44% of Texans thought they paid too much for housing. In 2022, that number went up to 50%. In 2023, a majority of Texans thought housing cost too much, 55%. And this year, the number has risen to 63%.

Texan attitudes about the economy in general are increasingly pessimistic and are not optimistic about the future. “Forty-two percent of adults in the Texas economy is worse than the rest of the country's. This is the highest year we've seen saying, say when we first began asking these questions,” Dr. Blank said. “Forty-eight percent say that their family's economic situation is worse compared to last year.

In fact, the findings say that 37% -- more than a third -- expect their children's economic future to be worse than their own. Even more notably perhaps, these declining attitudes are a departure from a longtime norm. “Prior to 2020, Texas tended to be bullish, they would say the state of Texas economy is significantly better than the rest of the country,” Blank said.
