Second of two columns Last week we looked at the context for reader Joanne Rhodes ’ question about the “TB cottages” on Zarzamora Street , which she has heard were home during the mid-1980s to nurses “recruited by Lutherans in the Philippines .” Paradoxically, since the late 19th century, while San Antonio historically has had higher-than-average rates of tuberculosis, it was also a health destination for its temperate climate and “pure air.

Downtown buildings that share an address linked to Grace Lutheran, aid agency To accommodate them, says the church history, “one by one, the tent cottages were replaced with cottages in a Spanish design.” Starting in 1936, the sanatorium built “a series of 21 beautiful, white-walled, tile-roofed, large modern bungalows that would do credit to a fashionable hotel,” says the San Antonio Express, Sept. 23, 1952.
