Terra Innovatum secures nuclear-grade graphite from Mersen to advance construction of its SOLO micro-modular reactor planned for 2027.
Terra Innovatum Global has executed its first procurement order for nuclear-grade graphite with Mersen , marking a pivotal transition from design preparation to physical deployment of its SOLO micro-modular reactor .
The agreement secures an important “long-lead” material needed for the company’s First-of-a-Kind reactor, planned for deployment in 2027. It follows the company’s confirmation that it has aligned its entire supply chain, securing all major nuclear and non-nuclear parts for the SOLO design.Shifting to the execution phaseBy securing graphite early, the company aims to mitigate supply chain volatility that often plagues advanced nuclear projects.“Securing nuclear-grade graphite for the SOLO reactor ensures that we are aligning critical long-lead materials with our development schedule as we move toward our first reactor development targeted for 2027,” said Alessandro Petruzzi, Co-Founder and CEO of Terra Innovatum.He added that working with Mersen establishes a framework for “serial NOAK manufacturing,” helping the company scale as global demand for low-carbon energy rises.Nuclear-grade graphite is a cornerstone of advanced reactor safety and efficiency. Marco Cherubini, the company’s Chief Technology Officer, explains that the material serves as both a structural and a functional component, directly affecting thermal performance and meeting regulatory standards.Technical precision and fuel flexibilityThe SOLO reactor, developed over six years since 2018 by nuclear safety and R&D experts, uses primarily off-the-shelf commercial components.This approach reduces supply chain risks and ensures cost predictability for early adopters. The platform is future-proofed to support both LEU+ and HALEU fuel options, adapting as global fuel supplies change.Regulatory and strategic momentumEarlier this month, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission officially filed key reports for the SOLO design, starting the formal safety review. The NRC’s technical evaluation is expected to conclude with safety assessments by October 2026, keeping the 2027 launch on track.Terra Innovatum’s strategy is based on a “build-ready” approach. Unlike traditional large plants, the SOLO reactor is designed to produce 1 MWe of power using commercial off-the-shelf parts. This modular design allows it to be used “behind-the-meter” in places like data centers, remote villages, and industries such as mining and cement production.Industrial scale and future outlookMersen, a global leader in isostatic graphite with over 50 industrial sites worldwide, provides the industrial scale needed for Terra Innovatum’s long-term goals. The partnership is expected to help the company improve manufacturing processes for mass production.“Establishing these technical and industrial foundations early is essential as we prepare the SOLO platform for scalable fleet deployment,” Cherubini added.Terra Innovatum works to address global energy shortages by combining expertise in nuclear design, manufacturing, and regulatory licensing. With its SOLO™ platform, the company offers modular technology designed to promote industrial sustainability and support long-term economic growth.The company has shared non-binding commitments for up to 100 units, including potential sites in Illinois. In the future, the SOLO platform could scale to deliver up to 1 GW of power through modular clusters, offering a zero-emission alternative to fossil-fuel thermal plants.
