Graduate Claims AI is 'Ghosting' Her, Blocking Job Opportunities
AIJob MarketRecruitment

A highly qualified graduate believes AI screening tools are preventing her from securing employment despite a strong academic record and extensive experience. She has applied for hundreds of jobs with limited success, and those interviews she has received have been conducted by AI systems.

A recent graduate, Karyna Lohvynenko, expresses deep frustration with the current job market , believing that Artificial Intelligence (AI) screening tools are systematically rejecting her applications despite a highly impressive academic and professional background.

The 21-year-old has applied for over 400 jobs, receiving only five interview opportunities, and feels 'ghosted' by the automated systems. Karyna’s credentials include being a student ambassador at the United Nations, graduating from Cardiff Metropolitan University with a degree in business and management, and receiving scholarships from six US universities before her education was disrupted by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

She has also held positions with the office of Ukraine’s First Lady Olena Zelensky, represented Ukraine on a national youth council, and worked with both British and American councils, as well as the King’s Trust. Karyna suspects that AI algorithms are filtering out her applications because her CV doesn’t contain the precise keywords the systems are programmed to identify.

The sheer volume of applicants, exemplified by over 150 people applying for a single barista position, exacerbates the problem, leading employers to rely heavily on automated screening. Even when she secures an interview, it’s often conducted by an AI interviewer or chatbot, a process she found impersonal and limiting. During one such interview, the AI abruptly moved to the next question after a brief pause, preventing her from fully elaborating on her experience and skills.

She feels that these AI-driven assessments fail to capture her personality and potential, as a human recruiter never reviews the recorded interviews. Karyna’s dream is to work in government, potentially even returning to Ukraine one day, but she recognizes the immediate challenge of securing her first full-time role. This experience has left Karyna feeling 'invisible' and disillusioned with the recruitment process. She now anticipates rejection and is surprised when she receives any feedback at all.

While she has been advised to target smaller firms, she believes these positions often favor interns or candidates with existing connections. Karyna questions the fairness of a system where applicants are essentially communicating with a 'wall' and where individuals are tailoring their responses to appease AI algorithms. She acknowledges the practical benefits of AI for employers but argues that it disadvantages job seekers, creating a frustrating and dehumanizing experience.

She believes the current system prioritizes keyword matching over genuine assessment of skills and potential, leaving qualified candidates like herself overlooked and discouraged. Karyna’s story highlights a growing concern about the impact of AI on the job market and the potential for algorithmic bias to create barriers to employment
