Trump Highlights Tax Initiative with McDonald's and a DoorDash Delivery

President Trump used a DoorDash delivery and a $100 tip to promote a tax initiative ahead of the IRS deadline, showcasing a tax deduction for tip income. The event, featuring a DoorDash driver, aimed to highlight the tax benefits for earners who receive tips.

With just two days to go until the IRS deadline, President Donald Trump wanted to showcase one of his signature tax initiatives with the help of some McDonald’s and a $100 tip to the DoorDash delivery driver.

When Sharon Simmons walked up to the exterior door of the Oval Office wearing a 'DoorDash Grandma' T-shirt, Trump greeted her with a welcoming, 'Hello. Nice to see you.'

Trump quickly acknowledged the optics by glancing at the media gathered around and saying, 'This doesn’t look staged, does it?' As the Associated Press points out, getting onto the White House grounds requires permission, while reaching the Oval Office and being that close to the president would mean even more screenings and background checks.

But whether it looked staged was not as important to the White House as what happened after a reporter asked Simmons if the president was a good tipper. With the deftness of a politician herself, she replied, 'Um… potentially.'

With that, Trump responded, 'Wait,' and pulled out a $100 bill. After getting the tip and a pat on the back from the president, Simmons laughed and changed her answer to, 'Yes, very.'

Simmons’ visit, besides being a chance for Trump to enjoy some McDonald’s, was designed to highlight last year’s tax package that let filers deduct some federal taxes on income earned from tips, the Associated Press reported. Simmons told reporters she had earned more than $11,000 from tips and the tax change would help reduce the amount of income she had to claim, the AP report continued.

After Simmons dropped off the food, it was Trump’s turn to deliver, as he took cheeseburgers and fries to West Wing staff, the White House said.
