Elders break the silence on intergenerational boarding school trauma.
Tune in for today's latest news stories on KXDF CBS News 13 at 5pm.FAIRBANKS, Alaska - On April 11 and 12, the Tanana Chiefs Conference hosted a Talking Circle Healing Gathering on Boarding School Trauma . Over 20 elders visited to share their memories and listen to others.
“Concealing the past does not bring us forward,” the TCC said, “it hinders our mental health. We can benefit greatly from the opportunity for our Native Elders to tell their boarding school experiences to develop our shared understanding and to promote intergenerational healing.” “And that’s what it’s all about - the older ones helping the younger,” explained Minto Village Council Chief Andrew Jimmie. “They’re all elders, but they all have traumas, of different categories maybe.”
Chief Jimmie shared how he grew up in rural Alaska, and, like many of his peers, was required to go to a boarding school ran by the Bureau of Indian Affairs at Mount Edgecumbe. While his experience was not as negative as many others’ experiences, he shared that it was very difficult for him to leave his family, and that he and his classmates were often called names and looked down on.
“Something like that, when they get to take you places you don’t want to be, it stays with you for years, never goes away,” Chief Jimmie said. “Especially the ones that wasn’t treated right.”
