Residents in the neighborhood are speaking out against an upcoming renovation project that led to the tearing down of said trees. They're fighting for a larger tree canopy at the South Park Community Center and playfield on the 8th between Thistle and Sullivan.
“For this one tree in particular, called the Hugging Tree, was a really big loss to the community because it was known as the tree that kids would go to and hug when they felt sad or just wanted to connect with a tree when they were playing at the playground,” Shettler said. “Those decisions from outside agencies hurt the community, and I think neighbors need to be considered,” Williams exclaimed. In response, a Seattle Parks department spokesperson wrote the city takes tree canopy seriously, adding they removed some trees to make room for driveway and emergency vehicle access, and they will be replaced.
