SYLVANIA, Ohio - A call about an intoxicated driver in the Eagle Trace subdivision led police to a home on Fox Hollow Court, where they found Marcia VanDruten dead.The victim’s daughter, Kinsey VanDruten, called her best friend, Emily Hayman, in a panic.
“She said he killed my mom. He killed my mom. And at that point I was already on the way to her house,” Hayman said.VanDruten’s husband was home, asleep upstairs, unaware of what was happening below. “Jon’s friends reached out to Kinsey saying they had received a message from Jon saying he was going to hurt her mom. That terrified Kinsey, so Kinsey tried calling her mom multiple times and when her mom didn’t answer, she got scared and called her dad. The phone was next to him so he heard the phone. He went downstairs and found her,” Hayman said.Their 15-month-old son, Hayes, was born premature during the couple’s honeymoon in Hawaii. “Kinsey now has to raise Hayes while his father is incarcerated and she doesn’t have a mother now,” Hayman said. This was not the first time Schmidt threatened to kill someone. According to a police report, he made threats against his parents. No charges were filed.“There are many times where Kinsey felt afraid. He would be arguing with her in the car and she would just ask him to calm down and he would get triggered and go speeding down the road and say ‘I’m just going to kill us,’” Hayman said.“No mother should ever have to go through this with her baby and no daughter should ever have to see their mother killed in such a brutal way.
