) - Hunter Forsythe is from Birmingham , but attends school at Appalachian State. The campus is located in Boone , North Carolina , one of the many places recovering from Hurricane Helene . Forsythe has spent most of his life volunteering and giving back.
He has helped a man recover from a natural disaster, but experiencing one is a first. He believes that you’re never truly prepared for a disaster until you experience it. “Waking up one morning and seeing just slates of rain is not something I expected. I didn’t honestly expect to not have power, water, and cell reception in a matter of two days. As soon as we found out about it, it was already too late. There was not enough time to really stock. The shelves were completely barren, and so being in the middle of something like this was eye-opening,” said Forsythe. Forsythe and his friends went and helped with relief efforts following the immediate aftermath of Helene. App State has canceled classes through at least Oct. 16. “Going off the mountain sometimes, helping with volunteer efforts, searching through the woods. We’ve been hiking supplies up to houses that are not able to drive back down to get supplies from FEMA or the Red Cross.” As soon as he was able to, Forsythe packed up and headed home. His normal six-hour drive, doubled, taking him 12 hours to get to Birmingham. “I had to pack my car with about a pallet of water to make sure I would be able to go through overnight trips. I didn’t know how long it was going to take me because of so many road closures, but I knew I wanted to come home and serve my community.” With his time off from school, Forsythe is helping his college state from home. This week, he is volunteering with Christian Service Mission during the “I think that the nonprofit space has done so much good for me personally, and I really want to give back to the community that has helped me grow into the person I am today.”Jury selection starts in trial of slain Lowndes County Sheriff ‘Big John’ WilliamsStates sue TikTok, claiming its platform is addictive and harms the mental health of children
