Tyler Heaps, the sporting director of San Diego FC, is facing a whirlwind of activity as he builds the MLS expansion team's roster.
Tyler Heaps , the 33-year-old sporting director and general manager of San Diego FC, Major League Soccer's newest expansion team , has been busy. He has 34½ hours to sift through a list of 360-odd unprotected players before the MLS Expansion Draft, followed by the start of MLS free agency and Stage 1 of the league's Re-entry Process for other players. Stage 2 is Thursday, and the SuperDraft for 477 eligible college players is Friday.
Heaps admitted to having trouble sleeping, but his fiancee Lindsey understands his hectic lifestyle. The team is building, not rebuilding, with 16 players internally, including 13 publicly announced. They still need to fill 10 more spots. Heaps expects to add another designated player, two or three internationals, two or three from the SuperDraft, two or three from trades, and maybe one current MLS player from Stage 2 of the Re-entry process. While striker, left wing, center back, and goalie positions seem strong, right wing, central midfielder, and outside back are lighter. Heaps is happy with the progress but recognizes there's still a lot of work to do. He emphasizes the importance of helping the 26 players settle into the club
