While The White Lotus expertly juggles its ensemble cast, Summerwater fails to remain focused.
In the opening scenes of the show, a fire erupts, raising questions about who might have died and how the inferno was started. This is structurally similar to The White Lotus, which is great for viewers who enjoy that type of flashback-led storytelling. Unfortunately, Summerwater struggles to build up the story in a satisfying way. Instead, the show's narrative threads tend to meander, confounding the viewer rather than explaining what actually happened.
That being said, although Summerwater has its shortcomings, it's still a series that fans of The White Lotus can enjoy. Like The White Lotus, Summerwater questions how people's lives and experiences alter their perception of the truth, and how greed and close-quarters confinement change how people interact with each other.
The settings of both shows, though vastly different, are also a major part of their appeal. Summerwater doesn't take place at a luxurious resort like in The White Lotus, but it also uses the idea of forcing characters from vastly different backgrounds into the same location and seeing how that affects their experiences.
While Summerwater has a much more somber tone, the show's character analysis, psychological storytelling, and unraveling mystery are aspects that fans of The White Lotus will certainly enjoy.
