The Wolves led at halftime, but the Bobcats rallied to win the Class 4A Division I state championship for their fourth straight title victory.
GEORGETOWN — Several of junior goalkeeper Isabel Templeman ’s teammates rushed to her as she left Birkelbach ’s Field following Davenport ’s 2-1 loss against Celina in the Class 4A Division I state championship.
Despite the score, it was hardly a losing effort. Templeman’s 18 saves set a UIL state tournament record for most in a game for all classifications, breaking the previous mark set by Texas City’s Sue-Ellen Robinson in 2002. “She’s an amazing goalie, and she’s going to go places,” senior forward Rylee Reisdorph said of Templeman. “She’s incredible. That performance shows it all. That’s who she is. She’s amazing.” NEWSLETTER: Your free all-access pass to the best high school sports coverage in San Antonio It was evident early that Templeman gave the Wolves their best chance to topple a dynasty. It was not to be, though, as the Bobcats rallied for the victory to win their fourth straight state championship, an unprecedented feat in UIL girls soccer. “That meant a lot to me for my teammates to recognize that,” Templeman said. “They’ve always been my biggest supporters. They’re all my best friends, and I love them so much. I think we fought with so much heart. We were so close, but that’s OK. We got so far, and we’re improving every year.” Celina held a massive 28-4 advantage in total shots that included a 20-3 edge in shots on goal. Celina junior midfielder Ryleigh Stifflemire was named the game’s MVP as she made an impact on both scoring plays with an assist and goal. “I’m super proud of our team,” senior defender Logan Strong said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better team. Celina is very talented. Obviously, they’ve won four years in a row, so we knew we had our work cut out for us. I think we left it all on the field.” Templeman was on a record track in the first half as Celina relentlessly attacked. Templeman had 10 saves by intermission, which was just shy of the Class 4A state record set by Boerne’s Kinsley Sawyer in a 3-0 loss against Celina in the 2022 semifinals. “I think Isabel had one of her best games ever,” Strong said. “She was all over the place. I’ve never been so proud of Isabel. She’s an amazing goalkeeper, and I’m sorry I don’t get to have one more year with her.” Templeman’s performance was enough to give the Wolves hope, especially after they took a 1-0 lead on Reisdorph’s goal after she split two defenders and chased down Strong’s free kick with 18 minutes before halftime. It marked Reisdorph’s 55th goal of the season and No. 161 in her four year career. “It feels amazing just to have one last goal, especially in my last year of high school and for it to be in the state championship,” Reisdorph said. It was also the final connection for Strong to Reisdorph. “It’s going to be really different without playing with her,” said Strong, who is signed to play volleyball with Grand Canyon. “I’m going to miss her a lot. She did a lot for our program and our connection was very good on free kicks. We scored a few goals off of that. We both had the will and want to do that.” Celina got the equalizer on senior forward Grace Pritchard’s header from close range on Stifflemire’s perfect delivery 14 minutes into the second half. The Bobcats took a 2-1 lead nine minutes later on Stifflemire’s strike from 23 yards out. The Bobcats were finally rewarded for all the pressure they applied. “Honestly, it was really exciting,” Templeman said. “I really haven’t got to do much thanks to my amazing defense. So, actually, it was really fun. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be here.” Reisdorph, Strong and defender Chloe Kriegel, were the team’s only fourth-year varsity players. They are also the team’s only seniors for the fifth-year varsity program. After never making it past the regional finals, the Wolves played for their first state title. “Finally making it here, even though it wasn’t necessarily the outcome we wanted, I feel very accomplished as a team,” Kriegel said. “Making it to state and being able to compete at this level is something you want your senior year.”
