At Friday’s monthly media briefing, Montgomery Police Chief Jim Graboys announced that the “Strategic Response Team” (SRT) started operating six weeks ago.

At Friday’s monthly media briefing, Montgomery Police Chief Jim Graboys announced that the “ Strategic Response Team ” started operating six weeks ago. In that time, Graboys said the team has served 91 felony and 55 misdemeanor warrants, in addition to over 100 traffic stops and various drug and weapon seizures.

That’s over two felony arrests per day. Leaders started formulating the unit near the end of 2025, creating a specific training regimen and defining the squad’s responsibilities to best serve the city.

“What makes them unique is not just what they have in their heart, the motivation, but also the training they have working together,” Graboys said. “We’re talking about tactical training, we’re talking about strategic response training, it’s all training directly relating to everything from you could say dynamic injuries, to vehicle stops, felony stops, even things related to pursuits.

Basically, the training is very well done, it was actually overseen by our SWAT unit, and it was overseen with the specific purpose of having the two units work together. ” The chief added that the new unit isn’t formed due to more crime taking place, rather to build off the encouraging numbers they’ve seen in recent years.

“Last year we dropped violent crime by 25% in 2025, this year we’re down about 12.5% on violent crime so that’s on top of last year. Overall crime this year to date we’re down over 20%, I believe it’s actually 23%,” Graboys cited.

“As far as I’m concerned, we’re going to keep going until we get down to like zero. ”Graboys also noted that MPD continues to see an “exceptionally high” number of calls, with 49,880 answered so far in 2026. 176,993 calls were answered total in 2025.

He went on to express his desire to see bond reform in the city by highlighting four recent crimes that involved suspects who were out on bond for other offences at the time:“These cases show the challenges our officers face when violent offenders who have already shown a willingness to commit serious crimes are released back into the community,” Graboys said.

“Justice must be a community effort. I encourage ever citizen to stay informed, stay involved, and vote for judges and legislators who will continue the work that must be done after violent offenders are apprehended. ” Finally, Graboys announced upcoming MPD police tryouts, inviting anyone and everyone interested in law enforcement to come by and speak with recruiters, take physical tests, and apply for the job.

The tryouts will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, at the MPD training center located at 5880 Old Hayneville Road. Only adults over 20.5 years of age are eligible for the Montgomery Police Academy. Individuals between 18 and 20.5 may be hired through the Cadet Program. Trump reclassifies state-licensed medical marijuana as a less-dangerous drug in a historic shift
