on May 11, Tanana Chiefs Conference announced their own efforts to support state and local actions in communities that are experiencing flooding from river break ups.
According to a press release from TCC, they are closely monitoring ongoing flooding and its impacts on communities in the interior. Much of this flooding was caused by ice jams as spring breakup season continues in the northern parts of the interior.
In the press release, Sharon Hildebrand, the Chief and Chairman of TCC, said “TCC has been actively monitoring the flooding situation, working closely with state and local agencies, and coordinating directly with our Tribal leaders to help ensure our communities have the support they need during this difficult time. ” She added that for many in these communities, “spring breakup can bring so much uncertainty and fear for our villages, especially for those watching the water rise around their homes, schools, and community buildings.
” As part of their effort to support recovery in these communities, TCC has been coordinating responses and needs for local leaders emergency response services and other partners, But, as break up continues in the interior, TCC is expanding monitoring efforts. Those efforts have flagged flooding concerns in Stevens village and flood watches for Galena and Fort Yukon. A flood advisory was put out for Ruby.
For those impacted by flooding in Hughes and Chalkyitsik, the disaster declaration has activated state programs including individual assistance, public assistance, temporary housing recovery and local infrastructure recovery.
