A former mayor and a candidate for city council in Lowndes County have been arrested.
The Alabama attorney general’s office says the investigation and arrests stem from allegations of misused absentee ballots in the August 2025 Ft. Deposit municipal election. Former Ft. Deposit Mayor Jacqulyn Boone , 51, and Ft. Deposit city council candidate Steven Thigpen , 49, were both charged with unlawful use of absentee ballots, a Class C felony, AG Steve Marshall ’s office said.
Boone ran for re-election as mayor and Thigpen ran for a seat on the city council during the August election. Both initially won their races. Due to “voting irregularities” however, the election was set aside, removing Boone and Thigpen from their seats. The AG’s office did not provide any further details on the irregularities.
In Alabama, unlawful use of absentee ballots carries a punishment of anywhere from one to 10 years in prison. No other details were immediately available while the AG’s office continues to conduct an investigation.
