Her family remembers Amanda Makor as a joyful, faith-filled young woman whose life touched everyone she met. Her alleged killer is still on the loose after fleeing to Puerto Rico.
Amanda Makor ’s family is mourning the sudden loss of the 24-year-old, who they say led a life rooted in faith, culture and family. Investigators say 36-year-old Rafael Duran Malave fled to Puerto Rico after, they say, he raped and killed Makor at their shared apartment on Progress Avenue in Susquehanna Township .
Makor family shares Amanda's memorySteve Makor said Amanda was deeply loved by everyone who knew her.'Amanda, oh my goodness. Amanda was a daughter. My niece, a sister, a friend,' said Steve Makor, Amanda Makor’s uncle.Family members said Makor graduated from Penn State Harrisburg in August with a marketing degree and had recently started her career at Lowe's. They said she loved traveling, singing and spending time with family.Court documents showed she was with her sister the same night her alleged killer fled to Puerto Rico. Makor's cousin said Malave was Amanda's boyfriend.'Everybody that knows her — she was very bright. She filled the room with laughter. She always loved to be around family and friends,' said Makor.A smile that never fadedMercy Makor-Ireland, Amanda Makor’s cousin, said the family wants people to remember her smile, not the way she died.'All I want us to do is to share her memory with her happy face, because she was always happy,' said Makor-Ireland.Amanda's family says the 24-year-old rarely showed when she was having a hard time and always tried to lift up others.'If you look in pictures that we've posted, you never see one that she's, like, serious. It's always her teeth. She's always smiling. And that was her identity. Smile,' said Makor-Ireland.Makor was proud of her heritageThe family said Makor sang in choirs at local churches and schools and volunteered at her church. They said her life should serve as an example for young people to always try to learn more about the world and other cultures, as she was proud of her Liberian heritage.'The world is going to miss Amanda,' said Steve Makor. 'She served a church that she went to. She served her family, and I can't say more about Amanda. I think God had a reason why she was sent to this earth. And I think he accomplished every little reason for which she was born.'Amanda’s service is set for 10 a.m. tomorrow at Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Harrisburg. The family said those who want to pay their respects are welcome. No cameras are allowed inside, according to the family.
