A new trade school in Calumet Park, a non-profit school with scholarship programs, is offering a pipeline to lucrative careers for a new segment of students. The school, Prosperity Building Futures Trades & Entrepreneurship Training Center, is funded through state grants and provides nationally accredited training and connections to major unions. The program is the first Black-owned pre-apprenticeship trades training center in the south suburbs.

Nineteen-year-old James Shavers, a high school graduate from Matteson, applied to multiple trade schools for construction, carpentry, plumbing, and electrician jobs but was never called back. However, he was quickly accepted into Prosperity Building Futures Trades & Entrepreneurship Training Center, a nonprofit center funded through state grants, after reaching out to the program. Inside, students not only learn a trade but also gain stability and purpose.
Licensed union instructors like Rashan Walker teach students the basic trades of electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and more. The program is the first Black-owned pre-apprenticeship trades training center in the south suburbs, providing nationally accredited training and connections to major unions. The goal is to give these young people a new measure of success and create a direct pipeline into high-paying careers
