Two of the suspects are involved in other cases and witnesses unable to testify cause case to linger.
DOTHAN , Ala. -Two of three men suspected of killing a Dothan businessman loaded with cash were to have gone on trial next week.Kevin Thornton booking photo.Houston County Circuit Judge Maurice John “John-John” Steensland postponed their trial for a couple of reasons.
In a motion last week, Houston County Assistant District Attorney J.T. Jones told him that multiple witnesses, including a forensics expert, would be unavailable to testify next week. Then, there are Thornton’s other legal problems. After pleading guilty in March to violating federal sex offender laws, he awaits a mid-summer sentencing date.On June 26, 2007, Perry Griffin arrived at Panhandle Converter, a Beverlye Road recycling firm where he worked. On the day he died, he packed $35,000 cash and prepared to travel out of town to purchase scrap products. Police say it was not unusual for him to carry large sums.Dothan police say video evidence indicates that two men attempted to abduct Griffin, but when Griffin, a husband and father, resisted and was shot.Thornton and Swain worked at Panhandle Converter, and police always believed Griffin’s murder was an inside job. They also implicated Kendrick Fitzgerald Bryant as the third suspect but have not formally charged him.Bryant is a 25 sentence on unrelated robbery charges, with a minimum release date in 2033, so there is plenty of time for the authorities to serve his arrest warrant.
