‘Unlikely’ that state retirees will see a cost of living increase in 2025

Retirees in the state are urging lawmakers to focus on increasing the cost of living , which hasn't been seen in nearly two decades.) - State retirees want lawmakers to focus on a cost of living increase that they haven’t seen in nearly two decades. A bill that would change how those increases are funded was introduced on Monday, but it doesn’t mean those increases will be coming any time soon. The last cost of living increase was in 2007. That was a 7 percent bump which cost the state 1.

In the current law, that would have to be funded up-front. The new law allows lawmakers the option to review a cost of living adjustment year-by-year. But the bill itself does not come with an increase, which isn’t sitting well with a former Huntsville city employee. ”2007 was great, but now the cost of living is so high,” James Campbell, a former city of Huntsville employee said. “They give us those 600 dollar bonuses every once in a while. That doesn’t even mean nothing, it’s more like a slap in the face to the retirees of Huntsville.”

“We’ve decided to take them one at a time mainly because this year they’ve got some funding up before the legislature this year,” Norris green, the president of the Alabama retiree association said. “Those things together, we didn’t think it was a good time to do it so we decided not to seek one this year but to try to get the funding change implemented.”Judge ruled no bond reduction for Dothan murder suspectGov.
