) - Members of St. Peter’s Catholic Church took to the streets of downtown Montgomery on Good Friday to mark the day with prayer, scripture and song during the church’s annual “Way of the Cross” procession.
Now in its 18th year, the walk is meant to memorialize the suffering Christians believe Jesus endured on the original Good Friday and to publicly share participants’ faith with the Montgomery community. Participants carried a wooden cross symbolizing the cross Jesus carried to Mount Calvary, according to church tradition, as they moved through the city. “Today is a very solemn day. It’s Good Friday, but we celebrate the loss of Christ on the cross so that we can gain the gift of him in the Resurrection,” said Justin Castanza, who participated in the walk. The group passed downtown landmarks including RSA Park, the Alabama State Capitol, the Alabama State House and the Alabama Supreme Court. Along the route, participants sang hymns and read scripture.“The tomb will be empty soon, but today, there is a major sacrifice for you and for me,” he said. “Today, we came together to be able to appreciate that gift.”“I think it’s this really interesting juxtaposition of our faith and the history of our faith with our community currently,” Castanza said. “Jesus walked the streets of his community and the people came out. … Today, our people came together and celebrated the sacrifice that Christ made, but also, we did it in Montgomery, which is our place for rebirth and the Resurrection.” Participants said they hope those who saw the group moving through downtown could see the depth of their faith and their willingness to share it. “To have faith in Christ and to have faith today that as Christ crucified, he would also be resurrected, I think, is a powerful statement for our community,” Castanza said.Prattville woman dies month after being hit by truckButler County sheriff candidate arrested on theft charge
