The airlift of British passengers from a cruise ship affected by a hantavirus outbreak has commenced with a chartered flight returning to the UK from Tenerife with assistance from a former Covid quarantine site. Additionally, there are plans for 30 crew members and a passenger who died aboard the ship to remain on board.
The evacuation of British passengers from a cruise ship struck by a hantavirus outbreak has begun, with people on a chartered flight back to the UK to isolate at a former Covid quarantine site.
As of Sunday evening, the evacuation was expected to finish by 7 pm on Monday, with the exception of 30 crew members remaining on board. The MV Hondius arrived in Tenerife on Sunday morning, with Spanish authorities starting evacuations of the ship by nationality. Currently, no passengers on the ship are showing symptoms, but 14 Spanish nationals have been flown to a hospital in Madrid.
The British passengers will be tested for hantavirus before disembarking and then isolated at an accommodation block on the Arrowe Park site. The UKHSA is transferring 22 British passengers and crew to Arrowe Park Hospital for isolation
