CLEVELAND, Ohio - A new sports medicine program at Mentor High School is giving students real-world experience in the field before they commit to expensive college programs. The facility, funded entirely by University Hospitals, opened a few weeks ago and serves 20 students who are learning skills that could shape their career paths.

Junior Kameron King said the practical approach fits his learning style. “I want to be a physical therapist in the future, so it’s really just the first step. It’s very hands-on. I’ve never really been a stand there and learn type of guy,” King said.“This course really opens up an opportunity for me if I wanted to get into medical. I want to do this because most importantly, I want to help people,” Reed said.Instructor Dan Popio said the University Hospitals partnership gives students advantages beyond classroom learning. “It could not be more beneficial for our students to learn their hands-on skills and having a partnership with UH and being able to apply that out in the real world. They are starting their networking experiences as early as juniors in high school,” Popio said.“If you’re interested in sports medicine and at least you think you want to do something like this, we have a great opportunity to see what the field is all about and not have to waste any of your parents’ money while doing it,” he said. Jamie Hart, manager for sports medicine at University Hospitals, said the partnership extends beyond injury treatment. “One of our biggest focuses in sports medicine at UH is we want to not just provide care for all the student athletes we cover, but we want to be partners to the school district. And one of the big ways we can be a partner is help with the experience of learning and give kids the opportunity to see what they want to do for the rest of their lives,” Hart said.Jordan Schultz on Jim Schwartz
