The City of San Antonio is moving forward with a baby box program aimed at reducing infant mortality, while the Schertz Police Department warns residents about phone scams impersonating the department.
More than a year after budgeting almost $500,000, the City of San Antonio says it plans to move forward with baby boxes . The initiative aims to reduce infant mortality and provide safe sleep options for families in need. The city council first approved the funding in late 2022, but the project faced delays. The baby boxes will be available at fire stations and other designated locations throughout the city. Residents can request a baby box through a dedicated hotline or online portal.
The baby boxes are designed to be safe and secure, meeting strict safety standards. They are equipped with a temperature-regulating layer and a bassinet-style mattress to ensure a comfortable sleep environment for newborns. City officials hope the program will make a positive impact on the health and well-being of infants in San Antonio.Meanwhile, the Schertz Police Department is warning residents about spoofing phone call scams impersonating the department. Police say they've seen an increase in residents calling dispatch services after receiving missed calls from scammers. The spoofed caller ID displays the department's nonemergency number, 210-619-1271, leading many to believe the call is legitimate. Schertz police urge residents to be cautious and not provide any personal information or financial details to unsolicited callers. They recommend hanging up immediately if you receive a suspicious call claiming to be from the police department. This isn't the first time Schertz police have encountered similar scams. In August 2024, they issued a warning about scammers impersonating federal Border Patrol agents and Schertz police officers. The department emphasizes that they will never ask for sensitive information over the phone. If you have any doubts about the legitimacy of a call, contact the Schertz Police Department directly at their official non-emergency number
