New research challenges the common advice given to men trying to conceive. Studies show that long periods of abstinence may actually harm sperm quality due to oxidative stress and energy depletion. Shorter periods of abstinence or even regular ejaculation may improve the health of sperm.
The biological processes governing reproduction differ significantly between men and women, particularly concerning the aging of gametes – the sperm and eggs. Women are born with a finite supply of eggs, and the age of a woman largely dictates the age of her eggs. This is in contrast to men, who continuously produce sperm from puberty onwards. This continuous production allows for sperm storage in the male reproductive tract before ejaculation.
Traditionally, men attempting to conceive have been advised to abstain from sexual activity for several days to maximize sperm count. However, recent research challenges the assumption that longer periods of abstinence invariably improve sperm quality. Analysis of data from 115 published studies, encompassing nearly 55,000 men, reveals that prolonged abstinence can actually be detrimental to sperm health. This study found that when men abstained from ejaculation, the health of their sperm significantly declined. This decline is attributed to two primary factors: oxidative stress and energy depletion within the sperm cells themselves. Oxidative stress, essentially a form of biological 'rust', accumulates in stored sperm, causing physical damage. Sperm, unlike many other cell types, are highly active and have a limited capacity to replenish their energy reserves. Therefore, prolonged storage leads to energy depletion, reducing their viability and effectiveness.\The implications of these findings are substantial, especially for couples undergoing fertility treatments, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), and those aiming to naturally conceive. Men are often instructed to abstain from ejaculation for a defined period before providing a sperm sample for analysis or procedures. This study suggests that, counterintuitively, shorter periods of abstinence may, in fact, improve sperm quality in the sample. It is therefore critical to reconsider the advice given to men who are looking to conceive. Furthermore, the findings highlight a potential adaptive benefit of male masturbation. Masturbation serves as a mechanism to flush out damaged, stored sperm, improving the quality of ejaculates and the overall health of sperm. The deterioration of sperm is not confined to the male reproductive system. Sperm can also deteriorate post-mating, when stored within females. Research extending beyond humans indicates a widespread biological pattern of sperm deterioration during storage. This pattern was observed in 56 studies across 30 different animal species, including birds, bees, reptiles, and various mammals. In these species, sperm quality declined during storage, both prior to ejaculation in males and before fertilization in females. These findings suggest that fathers and mothers who store sperm before fertilization have produced offspring with reduced survival rates. This may not be just a result of damaged DNA; it may also be caused by epigenetic changes. Epigenetic changes lead to a different pattern of which genes are actively switched on and being used – compared to freshly produced sperm. Interestingly, sperm deteriorated at a slower rate inside females than inside males. Females in several species have evolved specialized organs that have an improved capacity to preserve sperm quality.\Crucially, the research points to a potential intervention strategy that could positively influence fertility outcomes. While many factors affecting fertility are beyond individual control, such as environmental toxins, stress, and genetics, the duration of sperm storage represents a modifiable variable. The findings suggest that by adjusting the time frame between ejaculations, men may significantly impact the quality of their sperm and, therefore, the chances of successful conception. This research provides a valuable contribution to the understanding of sperm biology and offers potential avenues for improving male fertility. The findings offer a simple yet potentially powerful intervention. This intervention could have a significant impact on men struggling to conceive, or those looking to improve their chances
