The Alabama State education department announces its Sweet 16 finalists for Teacher of the Year.
) - The Alabama State Department of Education released its Sweet 16 finalists for Alabama Teacher of the Year, and two teachers from the area made the cut. Elizabeth Eubanks Von Hofe from Spanish Fort Elementary School in Baldwin County and Jennifer Ann Asberry from Council Traditional School in Mobile County are in the running.
Elizabeth Von Hofe, Spanish Fort Elementary, left; Jennifer Asberry, Council Traditional School, right Von Hofe received dual bachelor’s degrees in business and church vocations from Martin Methodist College and later earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Alabama. Von Hofe spent more than a decade working in health care administration in Tennessee as a licensed nursing home administrator and later served as a hospice administrator. After moving to south Alabama, she began working as a substitute teacher. She then earned a master’s degree in collaborative education and became National Board certified in her third year of teaching. Asberry earned a master of education and a bachelor of science in elementary education from the University of South Alabama, in addition to secondary certification in English Language Arts. Asberry has spent more than 20 years as an educator and has taught at Council Traditional School since 2016 and has led Council’s STEAM lab for the past five years. She is a UTEACH South Mentor, assisting STEM majors at the University of South Alabama.
