.The combination of gusty winds, and extremely low humidity was not helping firefighting efforts in Utah as 10 new fires started in a day's time.
Crews in Box Elder County, Utah , on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024, target hotspots after battling some of the state's many wildfires that day. Firefighters across Utah were battling several wildfires that ignited in one day as a red flag warning remained in place for a large portion of the state.
10 fires started had started in a 24-hour period, adding additional fires to the ongoing "large" incidents as of Thursday morning.The Rudd Fire, sparked by lightning, is burning east of Lagoon on the south side of Farmington Canyon. Crews are working to contain the blaze. It was not threatening any structures as of the most recent update to the state's wildfire information.The Willow Springs Fire in Box Elder County, which officials confirm was human-caused, has already consumed approximately 350 acres. The fire started when sparks from fence work ignited nearby vegetation. Heavy winds contributed to the fire's rapid spread, resulting in the destruction of two abandoned buildings and threatening at least one home.Adding to the firefighters' challenges, a new fire dubbed the Feedlot Fire broke out near Howell in Box Elder County around 7 p.m. Wednesday. It has already burned 200 acres and continues to grow due to strong winds. Two structures are currently at risk.The Silver King fire, which has been burning since July 5, is now 88% contained. To date, it's burned 18,222 acres.The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City has issued a Red Flag Warning for several areas in Utah, including the San Rafael Swell, Henry Mountains, and Grand Staircase regions."A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or are imminent," according to the National Weather Service. "A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior."- Relative humidity as low as 8 to 14 percentWestern Utah was experiencing some powerful winds that began Wednesday and and resumed Thursday morning. NWS warned drivers that strong crosswinds were possible on portions of I-15 and Highway 6 in Kings Canyon.1. Be prepared for potential power outages. 2. Secure outdoor objects, including decorations, garbage cans, and trampolines to avoid property damage.
